The number of people and vehicle traffic on the streets has increased due to a slight reduction in detail, which is unnoticeable in dynamics.

These characters do add a bit more flavour to the world and its largely homogenous population of NPCs you’re clearly not intended to look at too closely. Speaking of boss battles, that’s one area that takes a noticeable step up from our initial tangos with Kingpin, Vulture, and the rest. One of my criticisms of the first in Insomniac’s series was how uninspired many of the showdowns felt, with their quicktime-heavy fights making a light impact.

But bells and whistles aside, what makes the game so special — even among other Spider-media — is its ability to let players relish the minutiae. Like Stan said, the beauty of Spider-Man is being him, and while Peter’s sections mostly push the narrative forward in operatic ways, the Miles Morales sections make up the soul of the game in meaningful ways. Much of his storyline is centered around the “friendly neighborhood” part of Spider-Man and its here where the immersion and length provided by the video game medium set this title apart from the print and movies.

There are skills for Peter, skills for Miles, and shared abilities — and absolutely everything can be upgraded in one playthrough. Individual skills will benefit one character or the other, while the common tree will enhance both. Development includes increasing health, damage, acrobatics, and recovery speed of moves. Enemy behavior has also been updated, teaching them new moves and basic searching for heroes on the ceiling, and the roster of opponents has been expanded.

At launch, though, Spider-Man 2 on PC falls well short of expectations. The core gameplay is still a blast, and it’s still one of the best superhero adventures in gaming, but the crashes are too problematic to ignore.
